Pine Needle Baskets

These baskets are handmade by the artisans of the Ixchel cooperative in Solola', Guatemala.  The women go out together, often to quite distant places, to collect the longest pine needles they can find and then stitch them together with raffia and native grasses.  The decorative yarn and bead accents reflect their mastery of color and design.

These weavers learned pine needle basketry several years ago in a workshop taught by a basket artist from San Francisco.  They quickly became adept at technique and design and are now masters of the trade.  These popular pine needle baskets will bring the beauty and fragraneof pine trees into your home.

Working with fair trade, the women earn regular income, allowing them to feed their families, send their children to school, and harbor hopes for a better future.
